Give an Action Meaning

When a baby first starts saying “dada,” he isn’t really saying “daddy”; he’s simply practicing making sounds. It is our job as parents and teachers to help the child realize that the sound “dada” means “daddy.” After a few times of repeating back “daddy” when he says “dada”—and perhaps pointing at a picture or Daddy himself—he will begin to link the sound “dada” to his dad. We can do the same thing for signing. If your baby is clapping, ask him if he wants “more” of something. By responding to that action in a meaningful way, by giving him “more,” he will begin to link the action to its meaning.
